If history is any testament, these are the jobs youll want

If history is any testament, these are the jobs youll wantIf history is any testament, these are the jobs youll wantMost of us have heard the conventional wisdom Become a lawyer, doctor or engineer if you want job security. But in ever-changing times, that advice is somewhat restrictive and obsolete. There are burgeoning fields in all kinds of industries that are going to need mora workers, and many of them dont even require a college degree.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe know this because of projections by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which makes predictions about which jobs will flourish and which will flounder over a decade-long period. And we know that the projections are accurate because employees at BLS check their work from past years. In February, BLS released data on their projections for the fastest-growing occupations between 2006 and 2016, versus the actual rate of growth. For eight of the professions where BLS anticipated major growth, reality exceededexpectations. For example, BLS projected a 34% growth in skincare specialists between 2006-2016, when in actuality that profession grew by 60%. Mental health counselors were supposed to go up by 30% instead, they almost ersatzdarstellerd that growth rate. BLS calculated that physical therapist assistants would grow by 32%, but in fact, they surged by 47%. The list goes on.These recently released comparisons of projected versus actual job growth indicate that even during a recession that compromised the economy overall, BLS predictions were on theright track and even conservative. Which begs the question Which professions are projected to grow fastest during this decade?According to BLS, this honor belongs to solar photovoltaic installers, wind turbine service technicians, home health aides, and others. Between 2016-2026, mathematicians and statisticians are also on the rise, as are bicycle repairers and massage therapists.Credit Bureau of Labor StatisticsSome of these jobs require a bachelors or masters degree, but others only need a high school diploma or equivalent. All of them are expected to grow by at least triple the rate of all jobs, according to BLS.Credit Bureau of Labor StatisticsSo if youre a cashier or secretary and youre looking for a career change to an industry with job security, check out BLS projections. What are the fastest disappearing jobs (and is yours safe)

What are the fastest disappearing jobs (and is yours safe)What are the fastest disappearing jobs (and is yours safe)May you live in interesting times is a two-sided curse most often attributed to the Chinese and made popular by Bobby Kennedy in a 1966 speech. Like it or not, we live in extremely interesting times. Artificial Intelligence means that some jobs that might never have existed are completed with ease with the aid of computers. Cool, right? Completely. Unless youre one of the people whose jobs might be in danger of disappearing due to evolving corporate needs or the increased automatization of certain tasks.Michelle Armer, the Chief People Officer at CareerBuilder offered some tips on what to look out for in the next few years and how to understand whether your job is in danger of going the way of the dial-up modem. The top disappearing jobs over the next 2, 5, 10 years and why they might no longer be relevantSome of the top disappearing jobs over the next two years include executive assistants, farmers and ranchers, mail carriers, machine, and electrical equipment assemblers, and door-to-door sales workers, Armer shared via email. In the next five years, some of the jobs that are expected to disappear include respiratory therapy technicians, textile dyers and patternmakers, fishers, switchboard operators, and data entry roles.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn looking even further ahead at the next 10 years, she reveals data from CareerBuilder and Emsi shows that roles for logging workers, radio and TV announcers, engine and machine assemblers, and positions in metal works will likely decline.Blame it on technologyArmer admits thatThe growth of technology is causing some of these jobs to lose ground over the next two, five or 10 years. Technology neuschpfung is moving at an unprecedented rate and is rapidly redefining occupations and skills requi red in the job market. Workers in these roles, as well as workers across all job levels and industries, will need to continually pursue opportunities to upskill in order to maneuver around shifts in labor demand. But dont despair just yetWhile some jobs may be disappearing, all hope is not lost. With record-low unemployment and a jobs report that came in better than expected with 263,000 new jobs added to the U.S. economy last month, Armer reassures us that there is ample opportunity for job seekers across all skill levels. We also found that the United States is projected to add more than 8 million jobs from 2019 2023, spanning industries and wage brackets. The jobs to look out forThere are massive growth industries as well, With new jobs being added in healthcare, technology, marketing, education, and other industries. Armer believes workers can find new positions that fit their skillsets as the job market evolves. As long as you continue to evolve with it, of courseSigns your job might be disappearing or that your industry is weakeningIts always important to try to read the writing on the wall, so you can prepare for the next stage of your career- or start a job hunt- if necessary. Jobs or tasks that can be more efficiently and effectively accomplished through automation may disappear, said Armer, but theres an interesting twist.Workers might actually find they have time to devote to other tasks. So, if you think one part of your job is disappearing, dont wait until your skills become obsolete. Try to find new skillsets that allow you to evolve with your career. (Here are some tips on how to robot-proof your career)Avoid the downward professional spiralAn interesting trend Armer revealed was that 59% of employers plan to train and hire workers who may not be completely qualified for the position. The key is that they have potential. The top skills many hiring managers are looking for are the ability to be team-oriented, attention to detail, and customer serv ice, offers Armer which are not necessarily correlated to someones past work experience.Talk about a silver lining. Armer believes This shows that regardless of someones background, there are opportunities in the evolving workforce, and in many cases, they can receive training on-the-job after receiving an offer for a new role. So, what you know or what you know how to do isnt the only indicator of what you might be capable of in the future. Can you segue from a disappearing job to something more stable? If youre worried your job might be on the chopping block even if it seems jupe solid, Armer says Upskilling and reskilling are important, especially as technological innovation has a strong influence on the market. She adds that more than 8 million jobs are expected to be added to the U.S. market. Though they might not always be in the most coveted categories. For that reason, continually expanding your skill set means that instead of being potentially looked over, youre more easily ab le to straddle several career categories if needed. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Advantages of Working in a Large Law Firm

Advantages of Working in a Large Law FirmAdvantages of Working in a Large Law FirmLess than a quarter of all attorneys in private practice are employed by large law firms- those with over 20 lawyers, according to the American Bar Association. These law firms are sometimes known as mega-firms or Big Law, and there may be a good reason why so few lawyers get to join their ranks. Application to these firms is highly competitive.Employment in a large law firm has unique benefits that platzdeckchen it apart from other practice environments, from areas of salaries to advancement potential. But there arechallengesas well. 01High SalariesLarge law firms rank among the highest paid practice environments for legal professionals. Employees are often granted mora generous compensation packages than those working in the government, judiciary, small firm, non-profit, or public interest sectors. Unpaid interns are almost unheard of, unlike in smaller firms. These firms can afford to pay well because they typically attract major, moneyed clients.02Well-Credentialed ColleaguesBecause many large law firms are willing to pay top dollar, they can recruit the most well-qualified lawyers, paralegals, and staff. Mega-firms often recruit only the top students from the most prestigious law schools. Paralegals in large law firms generally have bachelors degrees as well as experience in their legal specialty.03Sophisticated, Challenging WorkMuch of the high-end, complex litigation and transactional legal work goes to large law firms because they boast high-caliber talent and a broad range of resources. And high-end, complex legal work in a broad range of practice areas provides an intellectually challenging environment for law firm attorneys and paralegals. These are firms that attract high profile class action suits that require strong, large staffs to manage and try in court. Of course, the downside to this can be very long workdays and virtually nonexistent days off.04Large, Diverse Cli ent BasesThe clients of large law firms tend to be more plentiful and diverse than those of smaller firms. A large, diversified client base makes it less likely that the firm will encounter financial difficulty if a client takes its business elsewhere. Many of the mega-firms have multi-jurisdictional practices and multiple locations across the globe, allowing lawyers and paralegals to serve international clients.05Extensive Firm ResourcesLarge law firms have more on-site resources than smaller firms. Large firm resources range from full-service copy centers and extensive law libraries to in-house gyms and full-service cafeterias.A large law firm has extensive administrative and support staff at its disposal as well. Staff can include legal administrators, legal secretaries, paralegals, marketing specialists, IT personnel, file clerks, librarians, court filers, and messengers.06Luxurious Offices in Prime LocationsLarge law firm offices tend to offer more plush and spacious surroundings than small firms, public interest firms, and the government. Large law firm offices are generally located in prime areas of town, close to the courthouse, with fine dining and other amenities nearby to woo clients and recruits.Of course, luxurious offices usually require a certain dress code, even on weekends and holidays.07Well-Developed Training ProgramsLarge law firms often establish well-defined training and mentoring programs for associates, paralegals, and other law firm professionals. Many also have elaborate summer associate programs and in-house educational programs that provide continued growth and learning opportunities for employees. Many large law firms create diversity initiatives to promote the success of women and minority attorneys and to encourage equal opportunity.08Significant Advancement OpportunitiesMany large law firms are based on complex organizational hierarchies, creating more opportunities for promotion. For example, the career path of a lawyer in a large firm might progress from entry-level/juniorchef associate to mid-level associate, to senior associate, to non-equity partner, then to equity partner, and finally to senior partner.09Pro Bono InitiativesLarge law firms frequently establish pro bono and public service programs that encourage lawyers and paralegals to commit a certain number of hours to helping the community and under-served populations, such as children and the elderly. This can be helpful because many bar associations require ongoing pro bono participation for membership.Dont Overlook Name RecognitionWorking for a top-name law firm thats well-recognized and highly regarded in the legal community affords a certain level of status and prestige. If you ever do decide to move on, it will look very good on your resume.

Your Future Is in the (Business) Cards

Your Future Is in the (Business) Cards According to a Microsoft study, a goldfish now has a longer attention span than you do.Hey, over here theres moreMicrosoft found that the average humans attention span is now eight seconds, down from 12 seconds in 2000. The goldfish clocks in at nine seconds. Why does Microsoft care, and why should you? Because shorter attention spans affect concentration, comprehension, reading, advertising, and interpersonal interactions.Given how short the average persons attention span is and that includes hiring managers and recruiters how can you become a memorable candidate? Its actually quite easy Leave behind a business card. The practice of exchanging business cards seems to have originated in China in the 15th century, according to some sources. The practice has evolved since then, but theres a reason its leise with us all these centuries later. Having a card to present while networking accomplishes several thingsIt sh ows that youre prepared. Youre not fumbling around for a pen and scrap of paper on which to scrawl your contact info.It presents the important information you want a person to know, such as how to contact you and how to find out more about you.It demonstrates respect for the tradition of reciprocating the exchange of cards. Avoid that uncomfortable moment when someone gives you a gift and you dont have one for themIts not enough to simply have a business card you want something that presents the best of you. A few guidelines on what makes a great cardProvide only necessary information so the card is not cluttered and doesnt confuse the reader. Name, one phone number, one email address, maybe a mailing address, maybe a LinkedIn URL (not Facebook), and a personal website, if you have one.Select a simple theme/colors/font combination that reflects your personality but looks professional. Your business card should be easy to read, and card scanners should be able to parse it. A fancy sc ript and/or tiny typeface are red flags about your judgment.Give yourself a title, like schlussverkauf Consultant, Customer Service Specialist, Digital Marketer something memorable and realistic. Unless youre in a really creative field, dont get cutesy. No one likes a Chief Thinking Officer, Creative Guru, or Rainmaker Extraordinaire.Utilize the back of the card for a few lines about your accomplishments or qualifications, such as Masters degree in education, Certified in C++, or Proficient in Google Analytics. Leave at least the top half of the cards back empty so the person has space to write notes.Remember Receiving another persons card is an invitation to follow up with them. Duck into another room and make notes of everything you can remember about your conversation on the back of the card. This may include information like a spouses name, a reminder to send an article of interest, inside information about their company, projects theyre working on, or next steps for following up.You are an outsider trying to get inside. Thats what networking is all about. The goal is for the recipient to remember you weeks and months later. You want them to think of you when they have a vacancy or hear about one before its posted. You are continuing a 400-year tradition of introductions and etiquette, so carry the cards in a decent case. Resist the temptation to use a binder clip or rubber band. You may make a good first impression, but a business card leaves a lasting impression. Thats how you become memorable.Ferris Kaplan is founder of Best of You Resumes.

When you dont have a lot of work experience to show, you need to emphasize your passion and desire to learn. An entry level resume should communicate that you have invested in your own future. Clearly communicate that you believe in yourself, and others should also.Create ResumeCustomize ResumeWhat to Include in an Entry Level Mechanic ResumeEvery entry level resume should have a focus on the training you have received and a section that describes how prepared you are to get started. Advanced repair skills will come with more experience. Employers are looking for enthusiasm and respect for the profession. A repair shop is a dangerous environment and operating costs and insurance can be high. Employers need workers who are safe and productive on the job. Make certain to include any experience you have around heavy equipment and all shop safety training courses you have had.Common Resume Fails Mistakes to AvoidIncluding irrelevant work history You may have had a summer job at a fast food restaurant or with a delivery service. These types of jobs take up space on your resume and do not add to your value. In fact they can hurt your chances of getting hired. A manager is more likely to select an applicant who is focused than one who appears to be trying different things.Lying It is tempting to embellish, and many hiring managers anticipate a few little white lies. They know what to look for and how to get to the truth. Stating that you are capable of performing specific repairs or are familiar with certain procedures when you really are not damages your credibility and hurts your chances of getting hired. These are the names that are most likely to get you hired

These are the names that are fruchtwein likely to get you hiredThese are the names that are most likely to get you hiredAn new survey directed by Zety, picks the brains of the hiring managers and recruiters that stand between us and our dream jobs. Unfortunately, in addition to the well-documented biases that keep many executives from calling us back, there are a series of oddly specific ones, like being born with the name Casey Smith for instance. The good folks over at Zetysent over a selection of fictitious resumes (which were identical in every aspect other than the applicantsnames), to 910 employers. Eighty-one percent of the employers involved were Caucasian, 7% were African-American, 6 % identified as Hispanic, and 6% said they were Asian or Asian-American. Fifty-three percent of this pool welches male, and 47% were female.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHeres what they fou nd.Why isnt the phone ringing? In addition to asking employers how likely there were to give each sample resume a callback, they were also asked to explain their reasoning. As you can see, Poor Destiny Jackson expressed some of the lowest percentages. When queried as to why, the most consistently cited explanation was, lack of education-remember all applicants had the same exact resume. The most significant percentage of employers said they did not intend on giving Jose Vasquez a callback. One hundred and four recruiters passed on Vasquez to be exact, 49 of which were men and 55 of which were women.Conversely, Malik Washington was found to be the most likely to receive a callback. One hundred and seventeen hiring managers said theywould do so-62 and 55, male and female employers respectively. It wasnt just the perceived gender of the applicant that affected call back rates the gender of the employer seemed to bear a pretty consistent weight on the decision-making process as well. On b alance, the hiring managers involved were more likely to callback applicants with names that implied that they were of the opposite sex, which is perhaps why some gender-neutral names were found to be particularly polarizing.Interestingly enough, the hiring managers that said they would not give these samples a callback frequently cited lack of experience. As previously highlighted, Casey Smith, a name that can easily belong to an applicant of any sex, was 82% less likely to get a call back than applicants with female names and 84% less likely to get a callback from applicants with male names. More specifically, women hirees were 91% likely to give Casey a callback compared to the 71% of male employers that reported planning to do so hypothetically.Unfortunately, no definitive conclusion can be drawn regarding the effect a name as on hiring probability, though the fact that it does, to at least some degree, certainly is cause for concern. I would also add that it would be fair to sus pect certain gender and racially motivated biases to have a hand. The authors of the review conclude with the followingAs much as wed like to think that our professional experience, education, and skill set are what pop out to hiring managers, our survey reveals this doesnt always happen,They continue, It was a little shocking to have some of our respondents say outright that they would not consider an applicant, and it was also insightful to see the biases that were present when our respondents viewed the same resumes, with the only difference being the name at the top of the document.

Generic resumes dont portray your skills as successfully as youd like. They fail to show what makes you the best candidate for a specific job.
